Building Connections

Part of the vision of Sawubona Blended Families is to provide blended families in black and brown communities with local support.

What is a Sawubona
Blended Families Group?

We serve a relational God who made us for relationship and community. Unfortunately, because of the unique challenges experienced, blended families often feel isolated and misunderstood, even in a church setting. An SBF small group is a great way to meet both relational and spiritual needs that can only be found in community. The right small groups create a culture of friendship, intimacy, and support.

Why does my church need a small group focused on blended families?

First, small groups help blended families feel seen, welcomed, and a vital part of the Body of Christ at large, as well as their local church.

Additionally, this is a large, and growing, demographic that is likely not being supported by their church. Churches have an amazing opportunity to support their members who are part of a blended family, and implement unique outreach strategies to blended families in their community. Blended Family Small Groups are Kingdom advancing initiatives in many ways.

How do I start a group?

Starting a small group is not difficult at all. It’s a low impact entry point for blended family ministry.

Follow the steps below:

  • Pray. Pray. Then, pray again!

  • Approach your pastor, or marriage ministry leader about starting a group.

  • Fill out the form below so we can support you with resources, and by pointing others in your community your way.

  • Find a gathering space; your home, the church, your local library (they often have rooms you can reserve for free.)

  • Invite your people.

What's Next?

We are hard at work on the curriculum, streaming video, and tools to support you in your small group efforts. However, you don’t have to wait.  Check out our Resources page. There you will find links to the Smart Stepfamily book and various guides on blended family small group ministry provided by our friends over at Family Life Blended.

Be sure to reach out to us at info@sawubonablendedfamilies.org to schedule your 50-min Virtual Q&A with Jonathan and Cheryl. That’s right! We’re in this too, and we’re in this with you! You get one, “in-person,” Q&A session with us at one of your Small Group gatherings.

Our hope is that churches of all sizes in black and brown communities would recognize the need for ministering to the parents and children in blended families, and make every effort to support them. Complete the form and connect with us today. We are here to help you get your small group up and growing!
